Andy Robertson thinks Arsenal are about to sign a player who is getting 'better and better'

Arsenal are poised to secure a promising youngster with considerable potential in James Wilson, if Andy Robertson's earlier verdict holds any weight. Currently, there has been minimal activity at the Emirates Stadium during the January transfer period.

However, as deadline day arrives,Mikel Arteta might be close to enhancing the club's youth ranks at the very least. Fabrizio Romano reveals that the Gunners have initiated discussions with Hearts regarding a loan arrangement for Wilson.

Whilst the 18-year-old has found it difficult to break into Hearts' senior side this campaign, an impressive return of eight first-team goals across 45 outings has apparently attracted Arsenal's attention. He also boasts a senior international cap for Scotland.

Regarding experience, it's believed the forward is considerably ahead of comparable prospects in his age bracket, with Arsenal reportedly exploring a deal that would enable them to assess his development within their youth structure before deciding on a permanent transfer.

Tied down until 2027, this summer might represent Hearts' final opportunity to command a substantial fee - or face the prospect of losing him for nothing at the conclusion of next term, reports the Mirror.

Wilson, who would join the academy setup should he arrive, not only suits Arsenal's philosophy of recruiting and backing emerging young talent, but international colleague Robertson has previously offered a ringing endorsement of his abilities.

Speaking last summer, the Liverpool left-back said: "Max Johnston has come on so much in the time since his first camp to now, he looks a hell of a lot more composed. Lennon Miller was good in march but has been excellent this week in training.

"Now he looks comfortable and happy. James Wilson as well, has been here a couple of times now, he keeps growing and getting better."

"Me, Scott McTominay, John McGinn, we are not going to be around forever, there will come a time where we need to hang the boots up. That's still a bit away but then it is up to the young lads. It'll soon be their squad and maybe in 10 years I can be watching them at a World Cup."

Wilson might not be the sole player Arsenal are considering for a deadline day acquisition, particularly as they may need additional strength in midfield following a serious injury to Mikel Merino. The Spanish international requires surgery on his foot, which could rule him out for potentially the remainder of the campaign.

A club statement confirmed: "Mikel will have surgery in the coming days and will then begin his recovery and rehabilitation programme. Mikel is expected to be out of action for an extended period, with the aim of returning to full training before the end of the season.

"Everyone is fully focused on supporting Mikel to ensure he is back to full fitness as soon as possible."

Consequently, reports indicate that the Gunners might explore the loan market as a temporary fix for Merino's unavailability. The 29 year old has been a vital component in Arsenal's achievements this term, notching four goals and three assists across 21 outings.
