Music composer Amaal Mallikrecently stunned a number of fans when he shared that his famous last name didn’t make his journey to becoming a professional easier, but rather harder. Following his stint on Bigg Boss 19, Amaal revealed his past struggles and revealed that he was most of the time judged or even rejected from small jobs just because people recognised his family background.
Amaal Mallik On Being Judged For His SurnameAmaal Mallik is known for producing hit songs that top the music charts, but his start was quite the opposite of a celebrity lifestyle. He said that from the time he was 15 to 25 years old, he spent ten years doing any kind of work that was available. He said that besides assisting at different shooting locations, his work varied from simple stuff like carrying hard drives for the post, and yet, he was never idle, always trying to learn as well as earn. Moreover, he said that being so young, he also had a sense of obligation towards the family financially.

One thing that made it difficult for him was people’s reaction after hearing his last name. Amaal said that at times he would get an offer for the assistant roles, but when the music teams came to know that he was from a musical family, they would drop him.
“It was generally assumed that I might exploit the music access or that I didn’t really need the opportunity,” he explained. These suspicions, he added, frequently deprived him of work.
More DetailsMoreover, the singer said that this way of thinking had not only affected him but also his younger brother, Armaan Malik, who was subjected to similar treatment. Amaal pointed out that they had not been given their careers on a silver platter, notwithstanding the public’s view.
“Instead, I think it is our surname that’s been one of the biggest hurdles for us. I am sure that every time the family name has cut the wrong way for us, our parents have felt terrible, and so would we,” explained Amaal.
Despite that, Amaal did not stop and kept moving ahead. Jai Ho turned out to be the first major musical break for the composer. Very quickly, he started to get recognition for his work, more so with tracks like Sooraj Dooba Hain.
Eventually, he composed songs for a number of hit movies such as Airlift, Kapoor & Sons, Baaghi, Azhar, and Badrinath Ki Dulhania, thereby gradually establishing his own name in Bollywood.
