Today, the daughters of India are not limited to just homes or corporate offices, but are also crossing the limits of the sky. From corporate boardrooms to war fronts, women are making their presence felt in places where they were once unimaginable. After Colonel Sophia Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, who recently led the briefing of Operation ‘Sindoor’, now another name has been registered in the pages of history in the Indian Army.
At the Army Day celebrations held on January 15, a young female officer attracted everyone’s attention. This is the story of Captain Hansja Sharma, who not only made a record but also proved that if the courage is strong, no obstacle can stop one from flying.
Who is Captain Hansja Sharma?
Captain Hansja Sharma, who traveled from a quiet neighborhood of Jammu to flying India’s most dangerous combat helicopter, has today become an inspiration for millions of youth. He not only broke the record, but also redefined the meaning of service on the frontline. At the age of just 27, Captain Hansja Sharma became the first woman officer of the Indian Army to get the qualification to fly Rudra armed helicopter. Hansja, born on March 9, 1998, topped her training at Nashik-based Combat Army Aviation Training School (CAATS) and created history by winning the ‘Silver Cheetah Trophy’ for the best combat aviator. She is the first woman to achieve this feat.
Journey from studies to cockpit
Hansja Sharma did her early schooling from Xavier’s Convent School and Parade College, Jammu. After this he did graduation in Zoology from Jammu University. He had a dream after completing his studies. Joining the Indian Army. He once faced Temporary Rejection (TR) during the army selection process. But he did not give up. Got nose surgery done, made herself mentally and physically stronger and appeared in the selection process again without any coaching. According to his mother, there was always a line written in Hansja’s room. Be ruthless towards yourself, this line became the identity of his passion and discipline.
Received this command on Army Day
Captain Hansja Sharma led the 251 Army Aviation Squadron in the Army Day Parade held in Rajasthan on 15 January 2026. During this, HELINA missile system was demonstrated from Rudra helicopter, which clearly highlighted the increasing role of women in combat aviation. Hansja, a former NCC cadet, had earlier also topped the 107th Air Traffic Management Course held at the Air Force Academy.
This flight was achieved due to mother’s sacrifice
The story of Hansja’s mother Rashmi Sharma behind this success is no less inspiring. Senior journalist and single mother Rashmi Sharma even sold her properties for the future of her children. Talking to Republic TV, she said, ‘Now Hansja tells me that I should stop working, but since I am a journalist, she says that if I keep working, I will probably be able to help many needy people.’
How is the future of women in the army?
The achievements of Captain Hansja Sharma are a strong example of the steps being taken towards inclusivity in the Indian Army. In the changing times, women are getting new responsibilities and their role is not just becoming supportive but also decisive. The story of Hansja gives the message that no obstacle can stand in front of determination, hard work and courage. She is an example not only for women in the army but also for every youth who wants to give wings to his dreams.
