Things keep going from bad to worse for the Labour party as more information about Lord Peter Mandelson's connection to Jeffrey Epstein comes out. Good Morning Britain, hosted by Ed Balls and Susanna Reid, delivered a massive update on the situation on Tuesday, as they said it could have "serious repercussions".
The presenters explained that the Met police is reviewing reports of "alleged misconduct in a public office" following claims that the former Labour MP may have leaked sensitive information to the prolific paedophile. Emails, released by the U.S. Department of Justice, appear to show Lord Mandelson talked to Epstein about things including lobbying on bankers' bonuses and even persuading then-Prime Minister Gordon Brown to resign. Speaking to Louisa James about the ongoing dilemma, Ed declared: "The ramifications of this could be serious."
Louisa agreed, saying: "Yeah, I mean these latest allegations are as serious as they are extraordinary. Up until now, the focus has been on Peter Mandelson's close friendship with Jeffrey Epstein and the fact that it continued after Epstein was convicted of child sex offences.
"But this is nothing to do with Epstein's crimes. It is about Peter Mandelson when he was at the heart of government, apparently leaking highly sensitive government emails to Jeffrey Epstein, who, because he was working in finance at the time, could have used that information to make money."
The reporter went on to say that Mandelson did it repeatedly, "casually" and sometimes "within minutes of him receiving the emails himself".
Louisa confirmed that the Met police is reviewing reports of "alleged misconduct in a public office" which, she says, carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.
Mandelson hasn't responded to the latest allegations but has said that he "regrets" the friendship with Epstein and apologised to the victims.
The former Labour MP has already resigned, but Prime Minister Keir Starmer is also pushing for him to resign from the House of Lords, but says that he doesn't have the power to kick him out.
Louisa said: "All of this is just raising more questions for Sir Keir Starmer, really, about whether he should have seen this coming... All of calls into question not just Lord Mandelson's judgement but the Prime Minister's judgement as well."
