Mahashivratri 2026: Mahashivratri is considered a very sacred and powerful festival of Hindu religion. On this day, special worship of Lord Shiva is done and devotees do fasting, Rudrabhishek and night vigil. According to religious beliefs, true devotion done on Mahashivratri can remove all the troubles of life.

But it is also mentioned in the scriptures that by violating some special rules on this day, the virtue of worship can be lost. Many times people unknowingly make such mistakes, due to which Bholenath may become angry instead of happy. Let’s know what to do on Mahashivratri 5 biggest mistakes.

1. Offering Tulsi or Ketaki flower on Shivling (Mahashivratri 2026)

The use of Tulsi and Ketaki is considered prohibited in the worship of Lord Shiva. It is believed that by offering these things the puja is considered incomplete. Only Belpatra, Dhatura, Aak, white flowers and Ganga water should be offered on Shivalinga.

2. Anger, lies and negative behavior during fasting

Mahashivratri fast is not limited to just fasting. On this day, purity of mind, words and deeds is very important. Getting angry, lying or insulting someone destroys the entire fruit of the fast.

3. Ignoring night awakenings

Shivratri is worshiped in four parts of the night. According to the scriptures, sleeping only after worshiping during the day is considered incomplete. On this day, keeping vigil at night and chanting Shiva mantras is extremely beneficial.

4. Worship without bathing and in unclean clothes

Cleanliness and purity have special importance on Mahashivratri. Performing puja without bathing or in dirty clothes is considered inauspicious. It is necessary to take bath and wear clean clothes before worship.

5. Consumption of tamasic food after puja

On the day of Mahashivratri, consumption of tamasic substances like meat, liquor, garlic and onion is completely prohibited. While breaking the fast, only Satvik food should be consumed.

Mahashivratri is not just a religious festival, but an opportunity for self-purification and understanding the essence of Shiva. If worship is done with devotion, rules and restraint, Lord Shiva bestows special blessings on his devotees. In such a situation, fast and worship on Mahashivratri only by avoiding these five mistakes.
