Despite drawing widespread criticism from film critics, a documentary based on the life of  U.S. First Lady Melania Trump has delivered an unexpectedly strong performance at the box office. The film’s commercial success has surprised many, especially given the generally lukewarm reception it received ahead of its release.

According to reports from international media outlets, the documentary generated approximately 7 million US dollars in box office revenue. This figure is considered remarkable for a documentary, a genre that rarely achieves such financial milestones. Analysts attribute much of this success to the strong support of  U.S. President Donald Trump’s political base and Melania Trump’s followers, who actively contributed to the film’s earnings.

Melania Trump herself acknowledged the film’s success by expressing her happiness on the social media platform X, thanking supporters for their response. However, the positive financial outcome stands in contrast to the critical reaction, as many reviewers had predicted the documentary would struggle commercially even before its release.

Film critics have largely shared mixed to negative opinions about the project, questioning both its narrative depth and overall execution. Despite this, audience interest—particularly among Trump supporters—appears to have outweighed critical assessments.

Directed by Brett Ratner, the documentary titled “Melania” focuses on a period beginning 20 days prior to the U.S. presidential inauguration, offering a behind-the-scenes look at a pivotal moment in American political history. The film has also been the subject of controversy due to claims that Melania Trump was paid 28 million dollars for her involvement.

In addition, streaming giant Amazon acquired the documentary’s rights for 40 million dollars and reportedly invested another 35 million dollars in its marketing, promotion, and distribution. The substantial financial backing further highlights the high expectations placed on the project, making its box office success a notable development despite ongoing criticism.
