New Delhi, 4 February 2026: The Central Government has undertaken a big campaign to maintain the security and accuracy of ‘Aadhaar’, the world’s largest biometric identification system. Till now, Aadhaar numbers of more than 2.5 crore deceased persons of the country have been deactivated by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). This ‘cleanliness campaign’ has been launched to prevent identity theft and misuse of benefits of government schemes. Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Jitin Prasade had given this information to the Lok Sabha.

The Union Minister had said in the Lok Sabha that after the death of a person, it is imperative to stop the process of fraud and unauthorized access to benefits of welfare schemes by using his Aadhaar number. Updating the database is often a challenging process as the residence of the Aadhaar holder and the state where the death is registered are different. UIDAI has implemented several security features to prevent identity fraud and leakage of government subsidies.

Now ‘Liveness Detection’ feature is used during face authentication, so that the physical presence of the beneficiary can be ensured. The Aadhaar holder himself can lock his biometrics, so that no one outside his knowledge can use the data of his thumb or iris. It has been made mandatory for all organizations to store Aadhaar numbers in encrypted format in the ‘Aadhaar Data Vault’. UIDAI never shares the key biometric information of the Aadhaar holder with any organization.

He further said that, to strengthen digital security, UIDAI has launched a new Aadhaar app. Through this app, Aadhaar holders will be able to share their verified details with offline verification seeking entities in a secure and seamless manner. Additionally, emphasis has also been laid on offline identity verification through promotion of QR codes and e-Aadhaar. It is worth mentioning here that currently there are approximately 134 crore active Aadhaar holders in India. The government wants to make the digital ecosystem more trustworthy through regular ‘sanitization’ of databases.
