PrematureBirth – Nick Jonas has opened up about the difficult and emotional journey he and his wife, actor and producer Priyanka Chopra Jonas, faced when their daughter, Malti Marie, was born months earlier than expected in January 2022. The singer described the experience as overwhelming and life-altering, recalling how medical teams worked urgently to stabilize the newborn after her premature delivery.

Unexpected Early Delivery Brings Urgent Medical Challenges
During a recent conversation on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast, Jonas spoke about how the couple had been preparing for their child’s arrival later in the year. However, their plans changed suddenly when they received news that the birth would happen much earlier than anticipated. The couple immediately prepared for the unexpected development as doctors managed the early delivery through surrogacy.
Jonas explained that Malti was born weighing only 1 pound and 11 ounces, making her extremely vulnerable. He remembered the alarming condition in which she arrived, noting that her appearance indicated immediate medical distress. Specialists in the neonatal intensive care unit quickly stepped in, performing life-saving procedures, including resuscitation and respiratory support.
Months of Intensive Care and Constant Parental Vigil
Following her birth, Malti remained under close medical supervision for nearly three and a half months. The period coincided with restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic, which added further complications to the family’s routine. According to Jonas, he and Chopra Jonas adjusted their schedules to remain by their daughter’s side as much as possible, taking turns in extended hospital shifts.
He described the environment of the intensive care unit as emotionally intense, as it was filled with families experiencing similar medical emergencies. While the hospital setting offered reassurance because of the dedicated healthcare professionals, it also carried constant anxiety about Malti’s condition. The singer said witnessing his daughter’s gradual improvement gave them hope during the uncertain period.
Critical Treatments and Steady Recovery
Throughout her treatment, Malti required multiple medical interventions, including six blood transfusions. Doctors closely monitored her development as she slowly gained strength. After months of round-the-clock care and observation, the medical team finally confirmed she was stable enough to leave the hospital.
Jonas shared that Malti has since grown into a healthy child and continues to progress well. Reflecting on the experience, he expressed deep gratitude toward the healthcare professionals who supported the family during the challenging time. He also mentioned that the experience changed his perspective on life, emphasizing the importance of appreciating everyday moments with loved ones.
Priyanka Chopra’s Earlier Reflections on the Birth Experience
Priyanka Chopra Jonas has also spoken publicly about the difficult period surrounding her daughter’s birth. In a previous interview, she revealed that Malti was delivered almost three months ahead of schedule. She described the newborn as extremely tiny, recalling the emotional moment when doctors worked urgently to help the baby breathe independently.
Chopra Jonas admitted that the uncertainty during those early hours was deeply frightening, as she struggled with the possibility of losing her child. Over time, however, the family found comfort in Malti’s steady recovery and the unwavering support of medical professionals.
Family Traditions and Professional Commitments Continue
Since overcoming the health crisis, the couple has focused on creating meaningful family traditions. Chopra Jonas has mentioned that one of their favorite weekly routines involves spending relaxed Sunday mornings together, describing these quiet moments as the most valuable part of their lives.
Alongside family life, Chopra Jonas continues to pursue several professional projects. She is expected to appear alongside Mahesh Babu in director SS Rajamouli’s upcoming film Varanasi, which is scheduled for release during the Sankranti 2027 season. Additionally, she will feature in The Bluff, portraying a pirate character set in the 19th-century Caribbean, with the film slated for release on February 25.
