Households have been warned not to use gas hobs to heat their homes on Monday, as snow is set to return to the UK once again. The Met Office has forecast that snow will return to parts of the UK on Friday, before clearing up into the weekend and then returning again early next week.
As part of its advice on keeping safe in snowy conditions, the forecaster warns 'never' use a gas hob or oven to heat your home, as it can increase dangerous carbon monoxide levels. The Met Office's latest weather maps show snow is set to fall in Scotland and England on Thursday evening into Friday morning, peaking at about 1am, before retreating mostly to Scotland on Saturday.
But its long range forecast for Monday, February 9 predicts snow will return next week.
The Met Office said: "Cyclonic patterns are expected to dominate across the UK during mid-February. Frontal systems over the Atlantic are likely to approach the UK at times, tending to become slow moving as they encounter a blocking area of high pressure to the northeast.
"This will result in showers or longer spells of rain spreading across the UK, these heavy at times. Rainfall amounts will probably be highest in parts of the west, including across areas already sensitive to flooding.
"As these bands of rain spread northwards, snow is possible across northern England and Scotland, mainly over high ground. Strong winds could develop in places, especially coasts. Temperatures will probably be close to normal overall, with any cold conditions more likely in the north."
If you become isolated during snow, the Met Office has a set of advice.
It says: "Following these simple steps will help keep you safe and well if isolated due to snow:
"Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature, both during the day and at night.
"Turn off electrical heaters and put out your fire before going to bed to avoid fire risk
"Don't forget your pets. Create a place where they can be comfortable in severe winter weather.
"Prevent frozen pipes, open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing.
"Stay indoors wearing layers of loose fitting lightweight warm clothing rather than bulky clothing.
"Never use a hob or oven to heat your home, they can increase carbon monoxide levels."
British Gas, in its advice on dealing with snow, adds that you should only use heaters which have automatic shut-off.
It says: "To be extra safe, only use heaters with automatic shut-off switches and non-glowing elements.
"Did you know there's an increased risk of house fires during cold weather? That's because more people resort to alternative heat sources like log burners and electric heaters to keep the chill off.
"So it's vital that you regularly test your smoke alarms and C02 detectors to make sure they're working properly. And always clear any ventilation outlets after a snowfall to keep them working efficiently."
