The Supreme Court has granted significant relief to former BCCI president Anurag Thakur, lifting the ban imposed on him in 2017 and allowing him to participate once again in the affairs of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
In a long-running matter related to reforms in Indian cricket administration, the apex court modified its January 2017 order that had restrained Thakur from any involvement in BCCI activities. With the latest ruling, the earlier prohibition stands fully withdrawn.
Relief After Nine YearsAnurag Thakur was removed as BCCI president in 2017 for failing to implement the recommendations of the Lodha Committee, which was tasked with restructuring the board. The Supreme Court had also initiated contempt and perjury proceedings against him, though he received partial relief later that year.
The court has now clarified that Thakur is free to take part in BCCI meetings, administrative work and other related matters, provided he functions strictly in accordance with the board’s rules and regulations.
Petition Against 2017 OrderA BJP Member of Parliament from Himachal Pradesh and former Union Minister, Thakur had approached the Supreme Court seeking a review of the 2017 directive. He argued that the order barring him from BCCI affairs was passed without granting him a proper hearing.
Accepting his plea, the Supreme Court amended its earlier decision, effectively removing all restrictions on his involvement with the cricket board.
Implications for Indian Cricket AdministrationAnurag Thakur assumed the post of BCCI president in 2016 but was removed within a year amid the court-mandated reform process. The latest ruling marks a notable shift, potentially enabling his return to an active role in Indian cricket administration after nearly a decade.
