According to Healthline, the US Dietary Guidelines 2020-2025 recommend that a 2000-calorie diet include about 740 grams of protein per week, chicken and eggs, with no specific limit for chicken. This means that until now, official guidelines have considered chicken a healthy lean protein, rather than red and processed meat in particular. A new study suggests that keeping total poultry intake to less than 300 grams per week may be optimal, and less than 100 grams per week may be safer.
What do the experts say?
Speaking to Healthline, oncologist Dr. Anton Bilchik called the study “alarming” and said it appears for the first time that white meat, particularly poultry, should be taken seriously as a risk factor for GI cancer.
Cardiovascular dietitian Michelle Ruthenstein also agrees that poultry produces less saturated fat and TMAO than red meat, but she says more research is needed to understand study results before changing guidelines.
