Munaf Patel Defends Gautam Gambhir Amid India’s Test Struggles

The coaching period of Gautam Gambhir for India cricket faced heavy criticism from cricket experts and sports fans because the team’s performance dropped in Test matches during home games. Under Gautam Gambhir India lost Test series to New Zealand and South Africa at home which ended their 12-year unbeaten run at home. The 2011 World Cup winning fast bowler Munaf Patel from India refused to put blame on Gambhir while he said that the Board of Control for Cricket in India should take responsibility for the situation.

“The reason we lose our home matches exists because our batters lack skills to handle spin bowling. They have stopped offering turning pitches in domestic cricket. Pitches now require 6 millimeters of grass to be present at minimum. The grass will prevent any pitch to show turning behavior.” Munaf explained during his appearance on ‘Breaking Sports with Vivek Sethia program’.

Munaf made it clear that Gambhir should not be the one to be blamed for India’s dip in home form

“Earlier, our curators would prepare pitches as per our strengths. “India creates turning wickets for home matches because our player strengths require corollary field conditions. According to Munaf, your foot placement and batting practice show you complete ignorance about your current location.

“Everyone’s blaming Gautam Gambhir. “He’s being unfairly targeted. He is not batting out there. The ones who are, aren’t prepared enough,” he added.

“Why are you targeting one person? His coaching abilities make him a good instructor. He has achieved both an ICC championship victory and a Test series draw against England. Munaf further said.

India failed to qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) final in 2025, and they already jeopardized their chances of reaching the WTC 2027 final by losing a home series to South Africa.

India will not play Test matches until after IPL 2026 and T20 World Cup 2026.
