Chocolate hazelnut spread has become a household staple with many Brits enjoying it on toast, in porridge and drizzled on pancakes. However, the most popular brand, Nutella, can be pricey and isn't always available at your local supermarket. Now, a new taste test from the UK's consumer champion, Which?, has discovered which chocolate-hazelnut spread is the best in the UK - and the winner wasn't Nutella or any of the big-name brands.
To find the winner, 60 dedicated taste testers gave their verdicts after sampling 11 chocolate-hazelnut spreads. Three major brands were compared to eight supermarket own-brand products from Aldi, Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, and others. Waitrose Essential Hazelnut Chocolate Spread came out on top with an overall score of 82%.
At £2.50 for a 400g jar, it's still on the pricier side but 40p cheaper than a 350g jar of Nutella.
The supermarket spread was praised for its chocolate and hazelnut flavours and its consistency. Others said it had the perfect level of sweetness.
Waitrose's spread is the most expensive of the supermarket brands, but it was the first choice of our taste testers, so it has been named a Which? Best Buy.
Nutella's iconic hazelnut and chocolate spread came in second place with a score of 81%. Costing £2.90 for 350g, it's definitely on the pricier side, but it was enjoyed by the tasters with more than 75% saying they loved the spread's chocolatey flavour.
The brand's hazelnut flavour and sweetness level were also praised by the tasters. However, more than half of the tasters found the consistency to be too stodgy.
The brand has been named a Which? Best Buy, and fans of the product can buy bigger 630g or 1kg jars if they want to get more for their money.
Tesco Hazelnut Chocolate Spread came in joint second place with a score of 81%. Tesco's spread earned both Best Buy status and the Which? Great Value logo, costing only £1.65 for a 400g jar.
The chocolate hazelnut spread was praised for its flavour and appetising appearance. Three-quarters of the tasters also enjoyed the sweetness level, and most praised its consistency.
Asda's Hazelnut Chocolate Spread came in joint third place alongside Lidl's Choco Nussa Hazelnut Chocolate Spread.
Both spreads scored 80% but differ slightly on price, with Asda's offering costing £2 for a 400g jar and Lidl's costing £1.65 for the same amount.
Asda's chocolate hazelnut spread was praised by three-quarters of the tasters for its chocolate and hazelnut flavours, with even more loving its sweetness.
Opinions on the consistency were mixed: more than half of testers thought it was just right, but others found it too thick.
Asda's spread is one of the cheaper options and is available in 750g jars, which work out cheaper per 100g.
Lidl's spread was praised for its sweetness levels and appearance, while two-thirds loved its chocolate flavour and thickness.
The spread's hazelnut flavour was enjoyed by just over half, but more than a quarter wanted it to be stronger.
