Mumbai – A routine late-night journey on Mumbai’s suburban railway turned tragic when a 28-year-old office worker permanently lost vision in his left eye after being struck by a stone during a violent dispute between two passengers. The incident unfolded around 11 pm on Tuesday aboard a fast local train heading from Andheri to Dadar, underscoring ongoing safety challenges on the city’s heavily used rail system.

Altercation Escalates Inside Moving Train

According to railway police officials, the trouble began as a verbal disagreement between two male passengers inside the crowded coach. What started as an argument quickly intensified into a physical confrontation as the train approached Bandra Railway Station. Witnesses said the situation deteriorated within minutes, leaving other commuters startled and unable to intervene.

As the train slowed near the platform, one of the men involved in the dispute jumped down onto the railway tracks. In a sudden and reckless act, he picked up a stone and threw it toward the coach, apparently aiming at the person he had been fighting with moments earlier.

Innocent Passenger Seriously Injured

Instead of hitting the intended target, the stone struck an unsuspecting commuter standing nearby inside the train. The injured passenger, identified by police as Khatri, had just finished his workday and was on his way home. The impact caused severe damage to his left eye, leaving him bleeding and in extreme pain.

Railway staff on duty acted swiftly after the train halted at Bandra. The injured man was helped off the coach and immediately taken to Bhabha Hospital for emergency treatment. Doctors later confirmed that the injury resulted in permanent loss of vision in his left eye, a life-altering outcome for the young commuter.

Police Register Case and Begin Investigation

The Bandra Railway Police registered a criminal case the following day, citing charges related to causing grievous harm and endangering public safety. Senior officers described the incident as a serious breach of commuter safety and assured that efforts were underway to identify and arrest the attacker.

Investigators began by reviewing closed-circuit television footage from Bandra station and surrounding areas. Video evidence helped establish the suspect’s movements after fleeing the scene. In parallel, police relied on information gathered through field sources and routine intelligence inputs to narrow down possible locations.

Suspect Traced and Arrested

Based on the collected evidence, the crime detection team tracked the suspect to the Dadar area. After confirming his identity and movements, police carried out an arrest operation on Thursday afternoon at around 2 pm. The accused was identified as Yogendra Vanshraj Bauddh, a 26-year-old labourer residing in Navghar East in Palghar district. Authorities said he originally hails from Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh.

Police officials stated that the arrest was conducted under the supervision of senior Mumbai Railway Police officers to ensure procedural compliance. The accused was taken into custody for questioning and later produced before a local court.

The incident has once again drawn attention to passenger safety on Mumbai’s local trains, which carry millions of commuters daily. Railway authorities reiterated the importance of reporting disputes immediately to on-duty staff and using emergency helplines when situations escalate.

Officials also noted that surveillance systems and rapid-response teams play a crucial role in identifying offenders, but emphasized that public cooperation remains vital. The investigation into the case is ongoing, and police are examining whether additional charges may apply based on medical reports and witness statements.
