On Wednesday, the central government informed Parliament that more than 2.8 million households have benefited from the free electricity scheme, with central financial assistance of ₹16,061.12 crore. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Yesso Naik, Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy, said that the government is also strengthening global partnerships to advance renewable energy, storage, and grid integration.

What is the PM Surya Ghar Scheme?
The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is a government scheme aimed at providing free electricity to households in India. This scheme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 15, 2024. Under this scheme, households are provided with a subsidy for installing solar panels on their rooftops. This subsidy covers up to 40% of the cost of the solar panels. This means that if you install solar panels on your home through this scheme and the cost is ₹1 lakh, the government will provide you with ₹40,000.

This scheme will help households save on electricity bills and generate additional income by selling more electricity to DISCOMs. A 3 kW system will generate an average of over 300 units of electricity per household per month.

How to apply for the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana?
Step 1: Visit the official website https://pmsuryaghar.gov.in/#/.
Step 2: Provide the information below to register.

Select your state
Select your electricity distribution company
Enter your electricity consumer number
Enter your mobile number
Enter your email address
Please proceed as per the portal instructions.

Step 3: Log in with your consumer number and mobile number.

Step 4: Apply for rooftop solar as per the form.

Step 5: Fill out the online application form.

Step 6: Wait for feasibility approval from your DISCOM. Once you receive feasibility approval, have the plant installed by any registered vendor with your DISCOM.

Step 7: After the installation is complete, submit the plant details and apply for net metering.

Step 8: After the net metering is installed and inspected by the DISCOM, they will generate a commissioning certificate from the portal.

Step 9: Once you receive the commissioning report, submit your bank account details and a cancelled check through the portal. You will receive the subsidy in your bank account within 30 days.

What is the eligibility for the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana?
If you want to take advantage of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, you must meet the following conditions.

The homeowner must be an Indian citizen.
The homeowner must own a house with a rooftop suitable for installing solar panels.
The home must have a valid electricity connection.
