Washington. Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has recently given a big warning regarding Artificial Intelligence- AI. Musk says that within the next two to three years, the energy consumption of AI will increase so much that the Earth’s energy infrastructure will not be able to handle it. He argued that the solution to this challenge could only be to establish AI infrastructure in space. He says that due to maximum use of solar energy, it will be easier to operate large-scale AI systems in space than on Earth.

Energy consumption is the biggest obstacle of AI
During a podcast, Musk said that the biggest limitation in the AI field is power consumption. The US uses about half a terawatt of electricity on average, and doubling this would be politically and technically challenging. In contrast, solar panels in Earth orbit receive continuous sunlight and are free from atmospheric losses, allowing these panels to generate many times more energy than panels on Earth.
SpaceX and the possibilities of AI in space
Musk also said that as the cost of launching satellites and carrying people into space decreases, improvements to orbital AI infrastructure will be possible. He believes that space will be the most suitable place for future computing capabilities. Musk’s company SpaceX is already working on making space technology affordable through rocket launching and reusable rockets.
Future technology and humanity
Musk claims that if humans remain confined to Earth only, our technological capabilities will be limited and further use of AI may also be hindered. He estimates that within a few years, the computing capacity of AI systems deployed in space will exceed that of the systems currently deployed on Earth.
This warning comes at a time when there is a serious discussion going on in the US over the huge energy consumption of AI data centers. The US Trade Affairs Minister had also raised the question as to why America has to bear the cost of running AI in countries like India and China. These data centers consume large amounts of electricity, which can have an impact on global energy and the environment.
