Ubisoft has reportedly canceled its planned co-op multiplayer Assassin’s Creed game that was set to bring four-player cooperative action to the iconic franchise, according to recent reports.
What Was AC League?
The multiplayer project, widely referred to as “Assassin’s Creed League” (AC League) by industry insiders, was being developed by Ubisoft Annecy and was originally intended to be a co-op expansion or DLC for 2025’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Players would have joined up to four assassins in scripted missions, potentially set in the same feudal Japan environment as Shadows.
The concept aimed to reintroduce cooperative gameplay to Assassin’s Creed after over a decade without regular multiplayer support — an idea fans have long discussed online.
Why Was the Game Cancelled?
The cancellation reportedly stems from Ubisoft’s recent internal restructuring and cost-cutting efforts. As part of a major corporate reset, the company has reevaluated and halted several in-development titles, including AC League.
Originally conceived as downloadable content to supplement Shadows’ experience, the project later shifted into a standalone co-op title using portions of the Shadows open world. Plans were even underway for invite-only testing in May 2026suggesting the game was far along in development.
Sources say Ubisoft’s restructuring unit called Vantage Studioswhich now oversees Assassin’s Creed, Far Cryand other major franchises, ultimately decided to pull the plug on League due to costs and shifting priorities as part of the company’s financial reset.
