According to a joint statement from the White House and the US Commerce Ministry, the two countries have announced the framework for an interim trade agreement, as a step forward to take forward the bilateral trade agreement (BTA) negotiations initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump in February 2025.

Under the agreement, the US will impose a reciprocal tariff of 18% on goods made in India, which will include goods such as textiles, leather and footwear, plastics, rubber, organic chemicals, home decor and artisan products.

According to the statement, the US will also remove tariffs imposed on certain aircraft and aircraft parts from India, which were earlier imposed for national security reasons.

Additionally, India will eliminate or reduce tariffs on several US industrial goods, food and agricultural products, including dried distillers grains (DDGs), red sorghum for animal feed, fresh and processed fruits, soybean oil, wine and other products.

According to the agreement, India plans to spend USD 500 billion on American energy products, aircraft and aircraft parts, precious metals, technology products and coking coal over the next five years.

Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal also lauded the agreement, saying it will open up access for Indian exporters to a USD 30 trillion global market, and will particularly benefit MSMEs, farmers and fishermen.

“This agreement will bring significant growth in exports and create millions of new jobs, especially for women and youth,” Goyal said in a post.
