Winter isn't quite finished yet, as UK weather maps show a 6-day blizzard is right around the corner. This means certain household tasks remain crucial, particularly tackling condensation.

In recent months, households have been encouraged to carry out one straightforward and cost-free job to eliminate condensation. This practice, dubbed "house burping", has become a viral hit on social media and consists of a 10-15 minute daily ventilation of your property, which guarantees fresher air and reduced dampness on walls.

It's a seasonal, effective home solution that genuinely delivers results, and now an interior specialist from Shutterly Fabulous has highlighted the one error which could actually worsen the situation.

Steven Dempsey explained: "House burping is the modern term for an age-old habit: cracking open windows for 10-15 minutes a day to let fresh air sweep through the home.

"The trend has recently taken off on TikTok, but many households have been practising this method for years - and rightfully so. Airing out your home offers ample benefits, particularly in the colder months.

"A quick burst of fresh air helps reduce moisture levels, preventing condensation from settling and stopping mould.

"It's especially effective in high-humidity rooms such as bathrooms and kitchens, and can be a game-changer for homes without extractor fans. However, one simple mistake could worsen the problem."

Steven emphasised the importance of fully opening shutters and blinds during this house burp, explaining: "If they stay closed, cold air can become trapped between the window and the blind, increasing the risk of condensation.

"Opening both the window and the blinds allows proper airflow and helps reduce moisture buildup around the glass. When done correctly, a daily house burp is also an easy way to improve your home's air quality."

He further explained this burst of ventilation can expel stale indoor air and replace it with fresh outdoor air, helping to reduce pollutants and allergens.

This process also naturally eliminates lingering odours, leaving your home feeling cleaner and smelling fresher. Steven highlighted the benefit of this method as it reduces reliance on fragranced products.

How to banish condensation:

  • Open your windows frequently
  • Use extractor fans
  • Keep doors closed
  • Cover pans when cooking
  • Dry clothes smartly
  • Wipe surfaces
  • Consistent heating
  • Furniture replacement
  • Open curtains

If these methods prove ineffective, it's advisable to seek professional advice as there may be a larger issue at hand, such as poor insulation or a structural problem.
