Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah is not expected to turn up in India's opening match of the T20 World Cup fixture scheduled against the USA soon. He is suffering from 'viral fever'. As per reports published in The Indian Express, the Indian team will definitely give Bumrah some rest and will not consider his presence in their starting match at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday.
Thus, India will have to rely on 13 players for the match, as their injured all-rounder Washington Sundar has not yet joined the camp. He remains at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru awaiting final fitness clearance.
Bumrah attended the stadium the day before, failing to turn up for the training session. This gives Mohammed Siraj a chance to participate in the game. Mohammed Siraj was included in the team at the last minute after Harshit Rana sustained a knee injury in India's warm-up game against South Africa in Navi Mumbai on February 4.
The BCCI gave a statement in its press release:
“Following consultations with a specialist and subsequent scans, the BCCI medical team deemed him unfit to participate in the tournament. The team management wishes him a speedy recovery. Mohd. Siraj will join the team as Harshit’s replacement in the squad.”

The Substitutes that have been made
Ishan Kishan has been set to make his opening slot debut for India, along with Abhishek Sharma in place of Sanju Samson. Ishan Kishan made his comeback to the T20Is in stunning fashion, scoring 76 and 103 against New Zealand. He repeated his performance and hit 53 off 20 balls, which included seven sixes, against South Africa in the T20 World Cup warm-up match for India.
This will be India’s first match against the USA in the T20 Cricket World Cup, apart from their meeting in 2024. In their previous meeting, the USA had given India a hard time before Suryakumar Yadav steadied the team’s innings. Even though India are firm favorites, in cricket, T20 is quite unpredictable, and no team can win for granted.
Hence, it is anticipated that Bumrah will recover in a week and shall return for India's subsequent matches.
