Michael Carrick tells Man Utd not to make 'knee-jerk' decision over job despite fine form

Michael Carrick insists Manchester United cannot afford to make any 'knee-jerk' decisions over the managerial position and that, as far as he's concerned, 'nothing's changed' when it comes to his chances of landing the job permanently.

The former United midfielder and coach was handed a contract until the end of the season after Ruben Amorim was sacked last month and has made a significant impact, winning his first three games at the helm to strengthen the Red Devils' chances of qualifying for the Champions League.

Consecutive victories against Manchester City, Arsenal and Fulham have fuelled talk that Carrick could yet be asked to remain in the post beyond the 2025-26 campaign.

But Carrick, who spent two-and-a-half years at Middlesbrough before being relieved of his duties last summer, says his thoughts on the future haven't been changed by results.

"Nothing's changed, no," he said in his pre-match press conference this week. "To be honest, it's not going to change what I do or how I feel about it. I think I'm fully aware of the role I'm doing here and the responsibility I've got.

"We want to be successful. I want the club to be successful beyond the end of the season: if that's me, if that's somebody else.

"At this stage, I can't control that, and we'll see what happens."

Carrick then went one further by saying that the Old Trafford hierarchy should not be swayed into making a 'knee-jerk' decision by results - even if that means he doesn't land the job.

The plan was for United to oversee a thorough recruitment process to determine Amorim's successor.

"The results of a short period of time don't change it," Carrick added. "If they have changed that, there is something wrong. It can't be so knee-jerk whether it's really good, whether there's a few issues we need to solve. It's steady progress really.

"You kind of know that football can twist and turn just as quickly, so we have got to keep level and keep focusing on what we need to do."
