New Delhi: India got off to a shaky start in the T20 World Cup 2026 after managing a 29-run win over the USA in their opening Group A fixture at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai. SkipperSuryakumar Yadav and bowlers guided the team to a victory after all the top batters failed to deliver in the first innings.

Indian skipper’s unbeaten 84-run knock guided the side to a modest total of 161 for 9 in the stipulated 20 overs with the bowlers led by Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, and Axar Patel helping the side cross the finish line. India suffered a shocking and unexpected collapse as the top batters in the team failed against a disciplined USA bowling attack.

Suryakumar Yadav the saviour

While wickets were tumbling at one end, skipper Suryakumar held the fort on the other end with a brilliant unbeaten half-century to help the side cross the 160-run mark. Tilak Varma and Ishan Kishan with scores of 25 and 20 respectively contributed a bit with the bat but the likes of Abhishek Sharma, Shivam Dube, Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel looked shaky and totally out of confidence.

From 77 for 6, the skipper led the charge from the front to take the side to respectable total and save the team from embarrassment. Shadley van Schalkwyk and Harmeet Singh stole the show for the USA side with four and two wickets respectively.
