In a tragic incident late Thursday night (February 5, 2026) in west Delhi’s Janakpuri, 25-year-old **Kamal Dhyani** (also spelled Dhyani or Dhyan in reports) lost his life when his motorcycle fell into a deep, open pit dug for repair work or a pipeline of **Delhi Jal Board (DJB)** on Joginder Singh Marg near Janakpuri District Park. According to family allegations and some reports, there were not adequate barricades, lights or warning signs around the 15-20-foot deep pit that was reportedly dug just a day earlier, although the DJB claimed that initial investigations revealed that the site was secured with barricades and green netting.

Dhyani (resident of Vikaspuri), who worked in a private bank in Rohini, was returning home at around 11:30 pm when he fell into the pit. His family lost contact with him and he searched desperately throughout the night, visiting several police stations (up to six according to some), but received no immediate help; His mobile location showed him to be in the same area, but he was not traced until Friday morning (~8am), when a passerby saw the body and bike in a ditch. The rescue team pulled both of them out; He was declared dead in the hospital. The police registered an FIR under relevant Indian Justice Code sections and are interrogating the people associated with the DJB.

The DJB expressed condolences, formed a committee to investigate (report expected soon), and said safety rules were followed, and regular inspections were being conducted after the Noida incident. However, three DJB engineers (executive, assistant, junior) were suspended pending investigation. Delhi Water Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh visited the spot and promised strict action if negligence was proved.

This case is reminiscent of a recent tragic incident in Noida (a software engineer drowned in a water-filled pit around January 2026). AAP Delhi President **Saurabh Bhardwaj** expressed grief over this on Arvind Kejriwal termed it a “murder” due to negligence. Family and friends suspected police delay and a conspiracy.

The public anger highlights repeated civil defense deficiencies in urban infrastructure. Officials are urging people to report unsafe places through DJB’s 1916 helpline.
