Cricket Gully | February 8, 2026 10:39 PM CST

Jacob Bethell an English young batter delivered a remarkable performance during his first T20 World Cup match when he showed his skills at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai during a Group C match against Nepal. Bethell scored a confident half-century which made him the second England batter to achieve a 50-plus score in his first T20 World Cup match, a record that had remained unbroken since Kevin Pietersen set it.

Kevin Pietersen scored 79 runs against Zimbabwe during the 2007 T20 World Cup match. Bethell joined the elite list of players who have achieved that milestone almost two decades later with his mature and powerful innings which he played under pressure.

Bethell’s Calm Knock Steadies England

England struggled early in the match after they suffered quick dismissals of their top-order batsmen. Phil Salt fell on the first ball of Sher Malla’s international career, while Jos Buttler and Tom Banton also departed cheaply. Bethell walked in to bat during the match when the team needed his calm approach to play through the challenging situation.

He took advantage of intelligent shot selections with his powerful swings in producing opportunities while he exploited opportunities with his opponent's poor deliveries. He reached his fifty in style by sweeping Kushal Bhurtel during the 11.3 over for a huge six that reached the second tier of the stands. Bethell displayed his confidence with the biggest hit of the match up to that point.

Bethell scored 55 runs from 35 balls, which included four fours and four sixes. The innings provided England with stability during a critical period of the match.

A Big Moment for Young England Star

The achievement of scoring a half-century in World Cup debut match creates a significant accomplishment for players who face pressure situations. Bethell demonstrated more maturity than his actual age when he performed at a high level during his first appearance on the international stage. He entered England World Cup history by matching the record set by Kevin Pietersen.

Harry Brook and he formed a successful partnership which allowed England to recover from their initial troubles while working toward a solid match total.

Match Situation So Far

The England vs Nepal match is still in progress at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. England has scored 128 runs with 4 wickets remaining after 13.4 overs. Jacob Bethell has been dismissed, while Harry Brook is batting on 40 off 23 balls and looking aggressive.

The team still has power hitters who have not yet batted, which includes Sam Curran and Will Jacks. Dipendra Singh Airee Nandan Yadav and Sandeep Lamichhane have played well for Nepal by taking important wickets from their bowling performance.

The final overs will become important because the pitch allows shot-making opportunities but dew will arrive later in the match. The match remains competitive since the outcome will depend on Nepal's performance during the second half.
