Apps being downloaded against Trump
In the protests taking place in Denmark against Trump, people are increasingly using an app called Made O’Meter. This app, which scans the picture or barcode of a product and tells whether it is from an American company or not, was downloaded about 30 thousand times in just three days. According to the app’s creator Ian Rosenfeld, this surge is directly to the Greenland dispute. He told that people were not just angry, but also wanted to know how to boycott America directly. This is why the app now recognizes multiple products simultaneously with the help of artificial intelligence and suggests European options.
Talking about the reach of the app, the use of the app was limited till last year, but the situation changed at the end of January. On January 23, about 40 thousand products were scanned in a single day, whereas in summer this figure was around 500 every day. Even now about 5 thousand scans are being done every day. In Rosenfelt’s words, ‘It’s not just politics anymore, it’s personal.
Similarly, another Danish app named ‘NonUSA’ was downloaded more than 1 lakh times in the beginning of February. Its creator Jonas Piper says it has given people a feeling of ‘getting a little strength back’. Many users say that at least they are able to do something.
Experts believe that the share of American products in Denmark is very low. Only 1 to 3 percent. The real American holdout is in the technology sector, where platforms like the iPhone and Microsoft are everywhere. Despite this, this protest, although symbolic, gives a clear political message.
