Silchar/Shillong: The tragic coal mine explosion in the East Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya has resulted in a rising death toll, now reaching 30, following the passing of two more individuals at a Silchar hospital, as reported by officials on Tuesday.
The deceased were from Katigorah in Assam's Cachar district and were receiving medical care at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH).
"The two individuals who succumbed to their injuries at SMCH on Monday night have been identified as Ramchandra Baishnab and Nimaruddin," stated a health department representative.
In total, nine miners injured in the February 5 explosion were admitted to SMCH.
The explosion took place at an illegally operated coal mine located in the remote Thangsku area of Mynsngat village in Meghalaya.
In response to the incident, the Meghalaya government has initiated a judicial inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the blast and to determine accountability.
Additionally, the Assam government has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the families of each deceased individual from the state. So far, at least eight laborers from Cachar district have lost their lives due to this incident.
