New Delhi: South Africa needed two Super Overs to beat a relentless Afghanistan in the T20 World Cup in Ahmedabad on Wednesday.
It was the first time that two Super Overs were needed to decide the fate of a match in the tournament’s history.
Tied scores after the regulation 20 overs and the first Super Over, pushed the match into a second one-over eliminator at the Narendra Modi Stadium where David Miller struck three sixes to lift South Africa’s score to 23 runs.
Afghanistan could only make 19 runs in the six balls while chasing their target of 24, plunging to two consecutive defeats that pushed them on the brink of elimination from the tournament.
It was South Africa’s second successive group match win that kept them on course for the Super 8 knockout stage.
Earlier, South Africa reached 187 for six in their 20 overs an then bowled the Afghans out for the identical score in 19.4 overs.
Two no-balls in the final over of the match from Kagiso Rabada enabled Afghanistan to tie the score, as they were run out in the final ball of the match.
In the first Super Over, South Africa needed 18 runs to win, with Tristan Stubbs hitting a six off the last ball to push the match into the second super over.
