Bangladesh Election 2026: General elections were held in Bangladesh on Thursday, in which Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has secured majority. The party has won 165 seats out of total 299 seats. With this victory, the chances of party president Tariq Rehman becoming Prime Minister have become stronger.

BNP President Tariq Rehman, son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, contested two seats in this election and won both the seats. Rahman returned to the country in December last year after 17 years. It is clear from the victory of BNP under his leadership that he can become the next Prime Minister.

performance of other parties

The alliance of 11 parties led by Jamaat-e-Islami has got only 45 seats so far. Jamaat chief Shafiqur Rehman has won from Dhaka-15 seat. Apart from this, other parties and independent candidates won three seats. Till now the results of 206 seats have been declared.

Voting and violent incidents

In this election, 48% voting took place till 2 pm and voting continued till 4:30 pm. However, clashes also took place during voting at many places. BNP leader Mohibuzzaman Kochi died outside a voting center in Khulna. At the same time, crude bombs were thrown outside the voting centers in Munshiganj-3 and Gopalganj Sadar area, in which three people were injured in Gopalganj.

Sheikh Hasina’s statement

Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, living in India, termed the elections as fake. He says that Mohammad Yunus captured power illegally and hence this election was conducted.

India has said to wait for the results of Bangladesh elections. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that only after the results come, it will be seen what kind of public mandate is there.
