Meta is reportedly developing a new standalone app that will rival Snapchat for short-term communication. According to a report, the company has confirmed that an internal prototype of the app, called Instants, is under development, allowing users to send and receive disappearing photos and videos. The social media platform owned by Meta is also reportedly developing a new feature with the same name and similar functionality for Instagram.
Instagram's Snapchat Rival
This in-development standalone app is expected to be modeled after Snapchat. A Meta spokesperson confirmed to Business Insider that it will allow users to send disappearing photos and is currently being developed as an internal prototype. However, it is not undergoing external testing.
According to mobile developer Alessandro Paluzzi, who reverse engineers apps, Meta's new app is called Instants. A reference to the app was also found on the Meta page on Instagram, where Instants was listed as a way to share disappearing photos with friends.
A Meta spokesperson has also reportedly confirmed that the social media platform is testing another new feature called Instants. Previously known as Shots, it is said to be available as a limited test in "some countries around the world."
According to reports, this in-development feature allows users to send disappearing media to their Direct Messages (DMs) inbox. The photo disappears after opening and expires 24 hours after sending. According to reports, Instagram states that Insta Stories can only be sent to followers who follow back and cannot be edited.
This isn't the first time Meta's platform has begun testing a disappearing message feature. Instagram's direct messaging system already has several features that allow messages or media to disappear after a set period of time. For example, Instagram supports disappearing photos and videos through features like "View Once" and Vanish Mode.
This move is expected to bring Instagram closer to Snapchat in terms of short-term communication. However, Meta has not yet revealed whether this feature will be rolled out or how it might be implemented into the app if it progresses beyond the prototype stage. Like other tech companies, Meta is known to develop and evaluate a variety of internal prototypes, many of which never progress beyond internal testing or limited trials.
