UP Panchayat Elections 2026: Big news is coming regarding the three-tier Panchayat elections to be held in Uttar Pradesh in the year 2026. Due to administrative hurdles and political equations, these elections may drag on till 2027. If this happens, then Panchayat elections and UP Assembly elections can be conducted simultaneously. This news has increased the heartbeat of those candidates who were sweating from village to village for the last several months.

Why was there a ‘brake’ on Panchayat elections?

The biggest reason behind postponement of elections is the non-reconstitution of the Backward Classes Commission (OBC Commission). The tenure of the commission has ended in October 2025. According to the rules, reservation cannot be decided without the report of the commission. The government has given assurance of forming a commission in the court, but it will take at least 4 to 6 months to prepare the survey and reservation list. In such a situation, extension of the deadline is considered almost certain.

Not an administrative compulsion but a well-thought-out strategy

Experts believe that this may not just be an administrative compulsion but also a well-thought-out strategy. Holding Panchayat elections just before the assembly elections can be risky for the government, because village level factionalism can affect the results of the big elections.
