The UPI system, operated by the National Payments Corporation of India, has made money transactions extremely easy. Platforms like Google Pay, Paytm, and BHIM are common examples.
But problems arise when the internet suddenly stops working, and an urgent payment needs to be made. In such situations, people are often forced to resort to cash. The problem is further compounded if they don't have cash in their pockets.
Few people know that money can be sent through UPI even without the internet. This doesn't require an app or data connection. This feature has been available since 2022 and is especially useful in areas with weak network connectivity.
To make offline payments, you need to dial *99# from your mobile. This is a USSD-based service that works even without internet. After dialing, a welcome message appears on the screen, and you are given the option to proceed.
Next, you need to select Send Money. You can send money via mobile number. Enter the mobile number of the person you want to send the money to. After entering the number, the recipient's name will appear on the screen, allowing you to confirm that the money is going to the right person.
You then need to enter the amount you want to send and enter your UPI PIN. Once you enter the PIN, the transaction is completed, and the money is transferred directly to the recipient's account.
To use this feature, your mobile number must be linked to your bank account. In many cases, Aadhaar linking may also be required. Also, use the number registered with your bank. This means there's no need to panic the next time your internet fails. Just dial a simple code and your UPI payment will be completed effortlessly. This Digital India feature can truly provide relief in many difficult times.
