More heavy snow could hit the UK in as many as 37 areas overnight, the Met Office has warned, with ice and rain in other parts of the country too.

The Met Office has issued a weather warning to the 37 areas of the UK in England, Wales and Northern Ireland from between Wednesday at 4pm until Thursday at 10am on the mainland and 4am and 8pm on Wednesday in Northern Ireland.

The Met Office's latest warning for snow in England covers much of central England, parts of southern England and most of Wales.

The forecaster warned that snowfall could 'accumulate widely' with up to 15cm of snow on higher ground, and 2cm could still settle even on lower ground, including in areas such as Manchester, Bradford, Birmingham, Stoke and Worcester as well as in Wales.

The Met Office's warning for Wednesday into Thursday says: "A period of snow could bring some disruption to parts of Wales, central England and the southern Pennines from Wednesday.

"Whilst there is some uncertainty in the details, there is the potential for an area of rain and snow to affect parts of Wales, central England and into the southern Pennines during Wednesday evening and overnight into Thursday.

"2-5cm of snow could accumulate quite widely above 150-200 metres, with perhaps as much as 10-15cm above 250-300 metres in mid and southeast Wales, as well as Herefordshire, Shropshire and the southern Pennines. Some small accumulations of snow, typically less than 2cm, are possible to lower elevations, especially from later Wednesday evening into the early hours of Thursday morning.

"Strong east to northeasterly winds will accompany the snow, which could exacerbate impacts in places."

The Met Office lists these 37 areas of the UK in its snow warning for Wednesday into Thursday:
