University Vice-Chancellor Professor Jaishankar Singh said that the Academic Council of the University has approved the proposal to change the name from the existing Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL) to National Law University. Singh said the proposal has been sent to the Executive Council for further necessary action. Sources said that after getting approval from the Executive Council, this proposal will be sent to the Punjab Higher Education Department. This would require changes to the Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab Act, 2006.
Meanwhile, Punjab Health Minister and Patiala Rural MLA Balbir Singh said he was not aware of the proposal and would not comment until he got the complete facts. “I will study the matter and collect complete information before giving any statement,” he said. Congress MP from Patiala Dharamvir Gandhi condemned the move and called it a “deliberate attempt to divide voters ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections”.
Let us tell you that Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, established under the Punjab Act, 2006, started functioning in Patiala in May 2006 and it got approval from the Bar Council of India in July of the same year.
