Health Desk. The habit of drinking alcohol can be a means of entertainment for many people, but excessive consumption for a long time can have serious effects on the liver. Liver is the most important organ of our body, which works to absorb nutrients from food, remove toxic elements and create energy. If the liver becomes weak, it affects the entire body.
1. Control the amount of alcohol
Excessive consumption of alcohol can damage the liver. According to experts, men should not consume more than 2 drinks daily and women should not consume more than 1 drink daily. Abstaining from alcohol completely for 2–3 days a week also helps in giving rest to the liver.
2. Adopt a healthy diet
Nutrition is very important to keep the liver strong. Include green vegetables, fruits, whole grains and protein-rich food in your diet. Stay away from excessive fried, fatty and processed foods. It does not put extra pressure on the liver and helps it to function properly.
3. Increase hydration and water intake
Lack of water in the body can also be harmful for the liver. After drinking alcohol, dehydration increases in the body, due to which the liver has to work harder to remove toxic elements. Drinking enough water throughout the day increases liver function.
4. Regular exercise and weight control
Excessive weight and obesity are a threat to the liver. Regular exercise, yoga or brisk walking reduces liver fat and prevents problems like fatty liver. At least 150 minutes of light or moderate physical activity a week is beneficial for liver health.
5. Get health checkups done from time to time
People who drink alcohol should have a liver function test (LFT) every 6–12 months. This test gives information about liver enzymes and functionality. If detected on time, liver problems can be prevented from progressing.
