Smartphone Feature: Smartphones have become an integral part of our lives today, but they can also be a major distraction while driving.
Smartphones have become an integral part of our lives today, but they can also be a major distraction while driving. Few people know that a simple feature on your phone can improve your safety on the road. This feature is Do Not Disturb (DND) mode, which most people ignore.
Research by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, an organization working on road safety, revealed that a large number of drivers don't even know how to activate this feature. Jake Nelson, an expert associated with the organization, also agreed that smartphones can pose a danger while driving, but if used correctly, they can help reduce risk. This feature is available on both Android and iOS smartphones.
The study included 300 licensed drivers. They were divided into three groups: those who already used DND, those who never used it, and those who had previously used it but later discontinued it. 26 participants were then monitored using specialized software for approximately 10 weeks. For the first five weeks, they drove normally, while for the next five weeks, DND mode was mandatorily enabled.
The results were surprising. With DND enabled, there was a 41 percent reduction in phone manipulation while driving. Furthermore, the likelihood of holding a phone while driving also decreased. According to various reports, thousands of road accidents occur every year simply because drivers are distracted by their phones.
At the beginning of the research, less than half of the participants were aware of this feature, and most didn't know how to use it. This is why, despite having a small setting option, it is often disabled.
DND mode essentially puts the phone on silent. Calls, messages, and notifications keep coming, but they don't ring or vibrate. This helps keep your focus on the road while driving. If necessary, you can change the settings to allow calls from specific contacts so you don't miss any important calls.
It's very easy to turn it on. The DND option can be activated by going to the phone's Control Center or Settings. This feature helps maintain concentration not only while driving, but also while studying or working at the office. Using the right feature at the right time not only increases your productivity but can also protect you and others on the road.
