WHISKEY ON ICE can give punters a pick-me-up in the Get Raceday Ready Handicap Hurdle (3.35) at Newcastle over an extended 2m7f.

Originally with ‘Shark’ Hanlon in Ireland – where he showed plenty of promise in maiden hurdles, being placed twice during the summer last year – he moved to the Nick Alexander yard in December.

Following a lack-lustre introduction over 2m4f at Hexham on heavy ground that probably did not suit, the six-year-old ran well on his most recent start 30 days ago at Musselburgh when carrying top weight on his handicap debut over three miles.

Taking over at the head of affairs before two out, he was only headed by Dearkeithandkaty in the closing stages, going down by a length.

He looks sure to build on that and can achieve a maiden victory at the expense of stablemate Better Be Definite.

AL SHABAB is the way to go in the Midnite: Built For 2026 Not 2006 Handicap (8.30) at Wolverhampton.

Trained by David Evans, the son of Saxon Warrior can be forgiven his last run 19 days ago in a classified event at Lingfield when racing too freely to get in a blow.

But he can build on his previous efforts, including when a silver medallist over course and distance in January.

He also has in-form Sean Levey in the saddle.
