France: French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Monday that France would increase the number of its nuclear weapons, but he did not give a specific number. At present the number of nuclear weapons possessed by France is said to be less than 300.

This will probably be the first time since 1992 that France will increase its nuclear arsenal. “I have decided to increase the number of combat weapons in our arsenal,” Macron said at the military base in Le Long in northwestern France.

The French president’s speech was aimed at clarifying how French nuclear weapons fit into Europe’s security amid concerns raised on the continent by recurring tensions with US President Donald Trump.
