Noida: Khushi Kapoor is set to star in Mom 2, the sequel to her mother Sridevi’s last film Mom, sources confirmed. The young actor, who made her debut with The Archies in 2023, is currently shooting for the film at the Noida International Film City along the Yamuna Expressway in Uttar Pradesh.

The sequel is directed by Girish Kohli and also features Jisshu Sengupta and Karishma Tanna in pivotal roles. The film is being produced by Boney Kapoor, Khushi’s father, who had also co-produced the original 2017 film, along with producer Akshai Puri.

A sequel to a powerful revenge drama

The original Mom, directed by Ravi Udyawar, was a critically acclaimed revenge thriller. The film revolved around Devki, played by Sridevi, a mother who seeks justice after her stepdaughter, portrayed by Sajal Ali, is brutally assaulted by her classmates.

Released in 2017, the film earned widespread praise for Sridevi’s emotionally intense performance. She was posthumously honoured with the National Film Award for Best Actress for her role in Mom. The film had released just months before her sudden death in Dubai, marking it as her final screen appearance.

The sequel, according to sources, aims to retain the emotional intensity and socially relevant themes that defined the first instalment, while presenting a fresh narrative arc. Details of the plot are being kept under wraps.

First film at Noida International Film City

Mom 2 is being billed as the first feature film to be shot at the newly developed Noida International Film City. The project marks a significant milestone for the Uttar Pradesh government’s ambitious initiative to develop a world-class film production hub near the Yamuna Expressway.

Industry observers say that the choice of location signals growing interest in expanding film production infrastructure beyond traditional hubs like Mumbai and Hyderabad. The Film City is expected to attract investments worth several hundred crore rupees over the coming years, potentially generating large-scale employment opportunities.

Emotional significance for Khushi Kapoor

For Khushi Kapoor, headlining Mom 2 carries deep personal and emotional resonance. Sridevi had spoken passionately about her role as Devki during the promotions of Mom, describing the character as emotionally consuming.

“The character hit me strongly. It is full of emotions. It is all about emotions and feeling them,” Sridevi had told PTI in 2017, adding that she preferred to take up projects that were meaningful and distinct rather than routine commercial ventures.

Khushi, the younger daughter of Sridevi and Boney Kapoor, has gradually been building her filmography since her debut. Apart from The Archies, she has also appeared in projects such as Loveyapa and Nadaaniyan, establishing herself among the new generation of Bollywood actors.

Industry insiders suggest that Mom 2 could prove to be a defining project in her career, given its emotional weight and the legacy associated with the original film.

Expectations from the sequel

While it remains unclear whether Khushi Kapoor will reprise a character connected to Devki’s storyline or portray a completely new protagonist, the film is expected to maintain the strong female-centric narrative that made the original stand out.

Given the acclaim and box office performance of Mom, expectations are naturally high. The original film was praised for its layered storytelling, restrained direction and Sridevi’s commanding presence.

As production continues in Noida, more details about the storyline and release timeline are likely to emerge in the coming months.

For audiences, Mom 2 represents not just a sequel, but a continuation of a cinematic legacy — one that bridges generations within a single family. Whether the film can recreate the emotional depth and impact of its predecessor remains to be seen, but it has already generated significant buzz for its casting and symbolic value.
