News India Live, Digital Desk: This case shows the deep penetration of AI in modern warfare and the conflict between political decisions. While President Trump banned Anthropic, calling it “leftist” and “dangerous,” military officials believe it is impossible to eliminate the technology overnight.1. What is the whole controversy? (The Conflict) The crux of the dispute is contract negotiations between Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and the Pentagon: Anthropic’s terms: The company refused to allow the cloud to be used for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous lethal weapons, citing its ‘Constitutional AI’ principles. Trump’s anger: President Trump called it Termed a “betrayal of national security”. He declared Anthropic a ‘supply chain risk’ and ordered all government agencies to stop using it immediately.2. Iran used in attack despite ban? According to Wall Street Journal (WSJ) report, just hours after Trump’s sanctions order: Central Command (CENTCOM): The US Army’s Central Command used cloud AI during ‘Operation Epic Fury’ against Iran. Areas of use: AI was used for intelligence assessment, target identification and battlefield simulation. Reason: Military experts say the cloud is currently the only advanced AI model that is fully integrated into classified military networks. It will take at least 6 months to remove it.3. ‘Operation Vermillion’ and Venezuela Connection: Reports have also revealed that Anthropic’s AI has already been used in major operations: Venezuela: The cloud also helped in data analysis during the arrest of Nicolas Maduro in January 2026. India-Pakistan tension: During ‘Operation Vermillion’ between India and Pakistan last year, the US intelligence had resorted to the same technology.4. Entry of OpenAI (The Pivot to OpenAI) As soon as Anthropic is out, Sam Altman’s company OpenAI has won: New agreement: OpenAI has signed a new agreement with the Pentagon, under which it will make its models (like GPT-4o) available to the army without any ‘restriction’. Security Protocol: Altman has said that they will fulfill every need of the army while staying within the ambit of the law, due to which the Trump administration is quite happy.5. Anthropic’s side Anthropic has described the Trump government’s decision as ‘legally flawed’ and has said it will challenge it in court. The company says that they are with American soldiers, but they cannot allow AI to create ‘killer robots’.
