Two cricketing nations, West Indies and Zimbabwe, who were part of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, are currently stranded in India following their defeat in their respective groups. Both the teams' flights back home has been delayed following air space restrictions in the Gulf.
Commercial flight services to and from parts of the Gulf has been suspended following security threats that were the result of the latest military action. Sources confirmed that Dubai international airport, which is one of the busiest airports in the world, has sustained damages, while many international flights have also been impacted causing cancellation of flight schedules.
West Indies Wait After Super Eight Exit
Having been eliminated from the tournament following a must-win Super Eight tie against the Indian team in Kolkata, the team was ready for a flight back home. But the plans have since been postponed.
The board said in a statement:
“Cricket West Indies (CWI) wishes to advise that the departure of the West Indies Senior Men’s Team from India, following their exit from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, has been delayed due to international airspace restrictions."
The statement added:
“These restrictions are a direct result of the security threats posed by military action in the Gulf Region, which has impacted several international flight routes and required airlines to adjust scheduled services for safety reasons. CWI appreciates the understanding and concern of our fans, families, and stakeholders during this time."

Zimbabwe Also Affected, ICC Steps In
The Zimbabwean cricket team also finds itself in a similar predicament. They are still stuck in Delhi while new flight arrangements are being made. Confirming the issue, Zimbabwe Cricket said that the team was supposed to depart for home via Dubai, but that option was denied due to the Middle East conflict.
Zimbabwe Cricket said in a statement on ‘X’:
“The squad was scheduled to return home via Dubai, but travel plans have been affected by the evolving situation in the Middle East, which has disrupted key transit routes.”
The statement:
“ZC remains in constant communication with the ICC and team management on the ground to ensure the squad’s safe and timely return."
The ICC has now put into action contingency plans and has reached out to Airlines for alternate flight arrangements. It has been a dismal campaign for both teams, but their safe return home would be the most pressing concern for now.
