Using earphones or headphones for a long time can seriously affect your hearing ability. ENT (Ear-Nose-Throat) experts from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi have warned that excessive use of personal listening devices is becoming a major cause of “Noise Induced Hearing Loss”. World Hearing Day is being celebrated today on 3 March. On this occasion, Dr. Poonam Sagar of the ENT department of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi has given an important warning regarding the health of hearing.

Dr. Poonam Sagar said that if the habit of listening to loud songs continues for a long time, then the sensitive hair cells present inside the ear can get permanently damaged. These cells work to recognize sound and transmit it to the brain. Once they are damaged, the ability to hear does not come back completely.

Increased risk of noise induced hearing loss

According to experts, continuously listening to music at high volume through earphones or headphones is becoming the main cause of “noise induced hearing loss”. This problem is now increasingly seen among youth and teenagers.

Do not ignore these symptoms

Ringing or whistling sounds in the ears (tinnitus)

not hearing words clearly during conversation

asking people to repeat something again and again

Doctors say that the purpose of World Hearing Day is to make people aware about the health of hearing. Use earphones only for a limited time at the correct volume and if you feel any problem, immediately consult an ENT specialist.

Doctors appealed to the youth

On the occasion of World Hearing Day, ENT experts of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi have advised youth and teenagers to avoid using earphones at loud volumes. According to doctors, if a person listens to earphones even for just 5 minutes at a capacity of 120 decibels, it can be extremely harmful for the ears. At the same time, listening continuously for 8 hours at a relatively low volume of 60 decibels is also not safe. In both situations, hearing ability is negatively affected.

Increasing trend among teenagers

Experts said that the trend of using earphones for long hours on mobile, gaming and during online classes has increased rapidly among teenagers. Many youth increase the volume even more in noisy environments like metro, bus or traffic, which causes double pressure on the ears. This combination of loud external noise and high volume increases the risk of “noise induced hearing loss”. Once the sensitive cells inside the ear are damaged, hearing ability cannot be fully restored.

people becoming deaf at young age

Dr. Poonam said that usually people’s hearing ability decreases after the age of 50, but now cases of hearing loss have started coming to light only after the age of 40. A major reason behind this is the increasing use of personal listening devices like earphones and headphones.

It is necessary to take breaks every hour

He said that using earphones in noisy environments can be even more harmful, because people increase the volume to drown out external sounds. This puts extra pressure on the ears. According to Dr. Poonam Sagar, it is possible to avoid this problem if some precautions are taken. Listen to the device at less than 60% of its maximum volume. Do not use continuously for long periods of time. After listening for about 60 minutes, take a break so that your ears can get rest.
