Ever since smartglasses were first launched, those concerned about privacy have been protesting them. Recently, Meta faced significant criticism for its new smartglasses. The fact is that smartglasses are equipped with cameras and microphones. Wearing them can record you in public without your consent.
This is why many voices have been raised against this technology worldwide over the past few years. Non-consensual recordings can be misused to create deepfake videos or audio, directly violating your privacy. While no government ban has been imposed on smartglasses yet, some apps have emerged that can detect people wearing smartglasses around you. Today, we're going to tell you about one such mobile app.
The 'Nearby Glasses' app will detect smartglasses.
Amidst growing concerns about unintentional video recordings through smartglasses, a new Android app, "Nearby Glasses," has been introduced. This app identifies nearby smart wearable devices that come with cameras and are capable of recording. It specifically monitors devices that send signals via Bluetooth.
How does it work?
The Nearby Glasses app scans nearby Bluetooth signals. Each manufacturer assigns a unique public Bluetooth identifier to its device. If the app detects a signal from smartglasses from brands like Meta Platforms or Snap, it immediately alerts the user.
The app also allows users to add other Bluetooth identifiers, allowing for more types of wearable surveillance devices. However, the app's creator has acknowledged that false alerts can sometimes occur, especially when a standard Bluetooth device sends a signal similar to that of smartglasses.
Why was this app created?
Wes Johnrenaud, the developer of the app, says he is concerned about wearable surveillance devices. He calls them intrusive and unbearable technology without consent. According to John Renard, seeing the misuse of these devices and violation of privacy, he decided to develop this app.
