An official notice published in the London Gazette this morning reveals that a UK railway company that is described as "industry-leading" has plunged into liquidation. Liquidators were appointed to HIRD Railway Services Limited on February 27, 2026. The company is a leading supplier of specialist track-related products and services to the UK railway industry. It describes itself as an "industry-leading" provider that consists of a "highly skilled and dedicated team".

It promises products that extend the lifespan of railways. HIRD Railway Services is part of the HIRD group, which is a collection of businesses that supply "a wide range of sustainable and innovative infrastructure solutions" to the UK rail industry and beyond. HIRD was established in 1952 and has been a family business since, as the founder's son is currently at the helm. It has a principal trading address at Clifford House, Lady Bank Drive, Doncaster, South Yorkshire.

Gareth Howarth and Philip Lawrence, both of AMS Business Recovery, have been made joint liquidators. As opposed to administration, which aims to save a business, liquidation is the process of winding up the business, selling off its assets and paying creditors.

The official notice in the Gazette reads: "At a general meeting of the members of the above-named Company, duly convened and held at the place, time and on the date specified above, the following resolutions were passed as a special resolution, and an ordinary resolution respectively: that the Company be wound up voluntarily, and the Joint Liquidators be appointed."

HIRD Railway Services proudly says sustainability is at the core of what it does. "Everything from the manufacturing processes we use, to the products and the services we supply culminate in an overall service that guarantees longevity and value for money for our clients," its website reads.

"Forming close collaborative bonds with our customers plays an equally crucial role in our environmental output. Working closely with clients enables us to pre-empt their ever-evolving needs, protecting all parties from costly mistakes and material waste."

HIRD Railway Services has been contacted by the Daily Express for comment.

It is one of several UK companies that have plunged into liquidation in the past few weeks. Last month, a Scottish family-owned engineering firm collapsed into liquidation after operating for nearly 100 years.

A family-run UK furniture company also collapsed into liquidation last month. Companies often blame things like rising energy costs and increased prices of materials for financial struggles.
