Yesterday Match India versus England: Here's what happened

Sanju Samson's blistering knock of 89 runs off just 42 balls helped India set a big target of 254 runs for England in the semi-final of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. Asked to bat first in the must-win match, the Indian openers went berserk from the word go, collecting 12 runs from the first over. Samson hit a couple of boundaries in the first over of Jofra Archer to give India a blistering start.

Will Jacks came on to bowl the second over, and Abhishek Sharma greeted him with a couple of boundaries before falling on the last ball of the over, finishing with nine runs off seven deliveries.

Ishan Kishan then joined Sanju Samson at the crease, and Samson quickly got into rhythm, hitting three boundaries in the following over to keep the momentum going. The pair added two more boundaries in the fourth over. In the fifth over, Jamie Overton was introduced, and Kishan struck him for a couple of fours, helping India cross the 50-run mark inside the powerplay.

By the end of the powerplay, India had scored 67 runs for the loss of Sharma’s wicket.

Samson reached his half-century with a six in the eighth over, Liam Dawson’s first in the match, which went for 19 runs. Curran bowled the next over but conceded 20 runs as Samson and Kishan set a new record for the highest partnership by India in a T20 World Cup knockout match, adding 97 runs for the second wicket.

Kishan departed in the 10th over, scoring 39 off 18 balls. Shivam Dube joined Samson, and the duo continued to find boundaries at regular intervals. Samson was particularly aggressive, smashing Adil Rashid for two sixes in the 12th over and targeting Jofra Archer in the next, hitting two more sixes. His pursuit of another big hit ended when Phil Salt took a superb catch over the covers.

Suryakumar Yadav came in and made a quick 11 off six balls before falling to Rashid. This wicket meant Rashid equaled Adam Zampa’s tally of 44 T20 World Cup wickets, making them joint-second highest wicket-takers in the tournament, behind Shakib Al Hasan, who leads with 50.

Dube and Hardik Pandya added 22 runs for the fifth wicket before Dube fell in a bizarre runout. He had scored 43 off 24 balls, including four sixes and a four. Pandya contributed 27 runs off 12 balls, and Tilak Varma blitzed 21 off just seven balls, helping India post the highest total in a T20 World Cup knockout match.

This marked India’s sixth 250-plus score in T20s, with 19 sixes—the joint-most in a T20 World Cup innings. India also holds the record for the most 250-plus totals in Men’s T20 Internationals, with towering scores like 297/6 against Bangladesh, 283/1 against South Africa, and 271/5 against New Zealand.
