Unexpected jobs people were 'happiest in' - and they're not at all what you think

Everyone has different things they would like to get out of a job - some want to help people, while others are more focused on money or having a work-life balance. We're all different, meaning what we think is a "satisfying job" could be different things.

However, one Reddit user posting in the R/CasualUK community asking people what job roles they thought were great in reality. The user said: "I've just left a job I hate and I am ready for a career change.

"Inspired / scared by last night's romanticised jobs thread where I saw that many theoretical future careers might actually be terrible, please tell me: what jobs are actually good and fun and give a great sense of satisfaction?"

Hundreds of people commented below the post, but some of the roles people were "happiest in" were not at all what you would expect.

One person said: "Best job I have ever had is a linen porter at a hotel. It’s brainless paid work where I could chat to the maids all day."

A second agreed and said: "My first job at 16 was hotel housekeeping, being young and spry I was always helping move the bags! Definitely a job which keeps you fit that's for sure."

A third added: "Linen porter sounds pretty decent as long as you're given the proper equipment to carry the stuff. I did housekeeping for a spell and having to carry bags of linen up and down stairs totally f****d my hands for months after.

"Plus guests are f*****g pigs and treat the rooms as such. Kitchen Porter was pretty dope. Clock in, wash a load of s**t, listen to tunes, talk s**t with the chefs and FOH, clock out.

"Doesn't pay great but there's always OT and if you're lucky you'll be allowed to maybe chop vegetables or make fries. Plus, free food."

Another commenter said: "If you can get it, my job - a Train Manager/Guard/Conductor. It’s a hard job but one of the most rewarding.

"I don’t get satisfaction from charging people money but 99% of people don’t need charging anyway. Most people you come across are really cool, your onboard crews (if you work inter-city like me) are generally chill and it’s just a great industry overall to be a part of.

"I find it enjoyable having the level of responsibility I do have, but in a ‘this is fun’ way, not a ‘I'm gonna use this to be a prick’ way. I do have an interest in the industry as a hobby so maybe that helps.

"It’s the best job on the railway if you’re someone who enjoys working with great people and meeting really cool passengers too."

While another commenter, who clearly enjoys working by themselves said: "Only 3 months in at the moment but I am enjoying delivering supermarket groceries.

"I get to work by myself most of the day, I can work at my own pace as long as I track delivery time slots, and usually get to take more than my allocated 30 minutes break plus I get to listen to Spotify/ YouTube while I'm driving.

"The majority of the customers I interact with are nice, we offer early morning services to elderly and movement impaired customers. The only downside is the occasional delivery to a customer on the 8th floor of flats."

A second person agreed and said: "I do this for a supermarket. The pay ain't the best in the world but you keep you nose clean and use common sense, it's very easy and it's nice that pretty much everyone you meet will say thank you!

"Been doing for 18 months, previously I was in IT and my last job was WFH support for a awful American supply chain company. Don't think I want to do it forever, but at the moment it is perfect for me."
