Cheung shared footage of his proposal on social media on Wednesday. The event took place at his family’s residence in Repulse Bay and featured extensive set design, a live orchestra and choir, and a high-wire descent from 30 meters above ground.
In one video, Cheung was seen suspended from the rooftop before making a controlled aerial drop into the venue below, where Chong was waiting. After landing, he presented her with a scarf before kneeling to deliver his proposal vows.
The elaborate production was overseen by an international film director and a professional stunt team, who installed specialized rigging equipment inside the mansion to execute the complex sequence, according to Dimsum Daily.
According to members of the production crew, Cheung was advised to use a stunt double for the most dangerous portion of the performance. However, he declined and insisted on completing the descent himself.
Preparations for the proposal reportedly began about two months in advance. Cheung underwent intensive rehearsals to perfect his landing and ensure that his first step after touching down would be steady and precise.
Crew members said he repeatedly practiced the sequence despite sustaining bruises to his arms and knees during rehearsals. On the day of the proposal, Cheung also reportedly paused briefly on the rooftop to compose himself before beginning the descent.
Explaining why he chose not to use a stunt double, Cheung said that while visual effects could be delegated to others, a marriage proposal was something he felt he should carry out personally.
Chong, now 26, became Hong Kong’s youngest district councilor in the 2023 elections at the age of 23, according to the South China Morning Post.
She has also been dubbed Hong Kong’s “prettiest district councilor” by local media, per The Standard.
Cheung, 35, is the founder of Hong Kong Esports Limited and was previously named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia list.
According to ForbesHong Kong Esports Limited focuses on content creation and event production, with its platforms attracting about 3 million monthly unique visitors as of 2018.
