Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday ruled out the possibility of the BJP fielding Union minister of state for external affairs Pabitra Margherita from the Jorhat assembly seat, where the Congress has nominated Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi for the upcoming polls.
Margherita is a Rajya Sabha MP from Assam.
The Congress recently released a list of 42 candidates for this year’s assembly elections. Gogoi represents the Kaliabor Lok Sabha constituency.
Speaking to reporters, Sarma said: “There is no proposal in the party pertaining to Pabitra contesting from Jorhat. Pabitra is the Union minister of state in the ministry of external affairs, and we are proud of him.”
“We may see if Pabitra contests Lok Sabha polls of 2029 from Jorhat; however as of now, we are happy to see him in the Union council of ministers. We have several good candidates for Jorhat. It is a fortunate thing that a person from Assam holds this position and the state does not want to lose this opportunity," he said.
Sarma said the BJP would field a local candidate from the constituency. “We have several good candidates in Jorhat, people from humble families and backgrounds who are popular among the public. We will nominate one candidate from among the local names,” he said.
On the Sivasagar seat, Sarma said the party was yet to take a decision. “We have not taken a decision regarding the Sivasagar seat. The seat is desired by the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), and there are also many aspirants from our party. Discussions are ongoing,” he said.
He added that since Mahmora MLA Jogen Mohan has been nominated for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, the BJP will field a local candidate from the Mahmora assembly constituency in the 2026 polls.
The Sivasagar seat is currently held by Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi.
