The company is testing a new subscription on WhatsApp called WhatsApp Plus. It's completely optional, meaning only those who wish can pay to use it. This feature will be available in Android beta version 2.26.9.12, according to WABetaInfo. This subscription is being developed for both Android and iOS. This is the first time since WhatsApp launched in 2009 that the company is attempting to charge individual users for an optional premium service.

Key features available in WhatsApp Plus include custom themes, accent colors, and 14 different app icons. This allows users to customize the app to their liking. It also includes exclusive stickers, new chat ringtones (initially around 10, subject to change later), and more expressive message reactions. A major advantage in chat management is that while regular WhatsApp allows you to pin only three chats, WhatsApp Plus allows you to pin up to 20 chats to the top. The company has stated that this is the first set of features, and more tools may be added based on user feedback.

Benefits of Creativity Features
Notably, WhatsApp's core functions, such as messaging, voice and video calls, media sharing, and end-to-end encryption, will remain completely free. Users won't pay for these basic features. Meta says that upcoming subscriptions unlock more productivity and creativity features within the app, while the core experience will remain free. This subscription is different from Meta Verified, which is primarily for businesses.

Users will soon have the option.

This is currently in the testing stage. Some Android beta testers are receiving a waiting list option where they can join to receive notifications when the service becomes available. No pricing details have been revealed, and no launch timeline has been provided. Final features may change before launch. Separately, another subscription is being developed in Europe and the UK to remove ads from the Updates tab (formerly Status), but it's separate from WhatsApp Plus.

This news is interesting for Indian users, as WhatsApp is the most widely used here. Many people already wanted themes and customization. If this launches, those who want to use the app in a personalized way will have a good option. However, basic users won't be affected, as everything will remain free. Meta earns less from ads due to its private messaging model, so it's planning a stable income from subscriptions. WhatsApp Plus is a premium tier that offers customization and additional tools. It won't affect the free WhatsApp. Testing is ongoing, and more updates may arrive soon.
