Nepal: There has been a major upheaval in the recent general elections of Nepal. Prominent Rashtriya Swatantra Party (RSP) leader and former Kathmandu mayor Balen Shah won a landslide victory from Constituency-5 of Jhapa district.
He defeated former Prime Minister and CPN-UML President KP Sharma Oli by a margin of about 50 thousand votes. This victory has brought a new wind in Nepal’s politics, especially among the youth.
Balen Shah’s decisive victory
According to the final vote count, Balen Shah got 68,348 votes, while KP Sharma Oli got only around 18,000 votes. In this way, there was a big difference of about 50 thousand votes between the two.
Jhapa-5 was considered to be Oli’s traditional stronghold, where he had won several times, but this time Balen Shah created a stir there. This victory shows the strong position of RSP at the national level, where their party is leading in many seats.
strict party instructions
After the victory, Rashtriya Swatantra Party has given strict instructions to all its winning candidates. The party has said that no victory procession, celebration or rally will be taken out. Vice President DP Aryal said that the election victory is not an opportunity for celebration, but an opportunity to fulfill the responsibility.
He told that last year many youth had lost their lives in Gen Z protests. Their sacrifice cannot be forgotten, so now is the time to act.
Party’s message to the public
The party has asked the winning candidates to stay away from wearing flower garlands, taking out car processions or attending ostentatious programmes. Only a brief greeting to the supporters is allowed at the counting centre.
Aryal gave the message on behalf of party president Ravi Lamichhane and Balen Shah that voters have voted to end corruption and provide good governance. Therefore the priority is to fulfill the expectations of the public.
This election is an example of change in Nepal. Young voters rejected the old parties and chose a party with new thinking. This victory of Balen Shah is not only a personal success but also shows the strength of youth leadership in politics.
