Hotels and Restaurants Temporarily Barred from Commercial LPG as Government Prioritises Essential Services
In a significant development affecting the hospitality sector, oil marketing companies (OMCs) have temporarily restricted the supply of commercial LPG cylinders, allowing distribution only to essential institutions such as hospitals and educational institutions. The move comes amid concerns over supply disruptions and import challenges linked to ongoing geopolitical tensions.
According to internal communications sent to LPG distributors, commercial LPG cylinders will not be supplied to hotels, restaurants, and other non-essential commercial establishments until further notice. The decision has been taken following directives from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas to ensure that limited LPG supplies are prioritised for essential services.
At the same time, authorities have also extended the gap between bookings for domestic LPG cylinders, signalling tighter management of available gas supplies.
Commercial LPG Supply Limited to Essential Services
As per the instructions issued to LPG distributors, non-domestic commercial cylinders will now be sold exclusively to hospitals and educational institutions.
The directive clearly states that until the supply situation improves:
-
Hospitals and healthcare institutions will receive priority LPG supplies
-
Schools and educational institutions will also continue receiving cylinders
-
Hotels, restaurants, and other commercial users will not receive commercial LPG cylinders temporarily
The measure aims to ensure that critical public services remain operational even during supply shortages.
Booking Interval for Domestic LPG Cylinders Increased
In another move, the gap between booking two domestic LPG cylinders has also been increased.
Previously, consumers could book the next LPG cylinder after 21 days, but the waiting period has now been extended to 25 days. This change is expected to help manage existing LPG stock more efficiently while supply chains remain uncertain.
Supply of Non-Essential Commercial Cylinders Suspended
An internal notice issued on March 8 highlighted that the supply of Non-Domestic Non-Essential (NDNE) LPG cylinders has been temporarily suspended due to supply challenges.
The notice instructed distributors to:
-
Inform retailers, large commercial clients, and partners about the supply suspension
-
Maintain communication with affected customers
-
Assure them that supplies will resume once the situation stabilises
Officials have emphasised that the suspension is temporary and dependent on the availability of fresh LPG shipments.
Loading and Billing of Commercial Cylinders Halted
Several LPG distributors have confirmed that loading and billing of commercial cylinders have also been stopped for the time being.
According to distributors, bottling plants are currently preserving available LPG stock primarily for domestic cylinder refilling. Commercial cylinders are being released only in limited quantities for emergency services such as hospitals.
Until new LPG consignments arrive, commercial supply is expected to remain restricted.
Supply Disruptions at Key Terminals
Distributors have also reported supply disruptions at major LPG terminals.
For instance, Indian Oil Corporation’s Devanagonthi terminal in Bengaluru has reportedly halted commercial LPG supply. The disruption is believed to be linked to delays in LPG shipments arriving from Chennai and Mangaluru ports.
Because of these disruptions, the shortage of commercial cylinders has become particularly severe in certain cities.
Hospitality Sector Warns of Possible Shutdowns
The restriction on commercial LPG supply has triggered concern among hotel and restaurant operators.
Industry representatives, including the Bengaluru Hotels Association, have warned that if LPG supplies are not restored quickly, many establishments may be forced to temporarily shut operations.
According to the association, several hotels depend heavily on LPG cylinders for cooking, and prolonged shortages could severely impact daily operations.
Nationwide Impact Possible
LPG dealers suggest that the issue may not be limited to a single city. The temporary suspension of commercial cylinder bottling could affect multiple regions across the country, depending on LPG availability.
Government authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will decide when commercial supply can be restored based on incoming LPG shipments and stock levels.
What Happens Next?
For now, the government and oil companies are focusing on prioritising domestic consumption and essential services such as hospitals and schools. Once LPG imports stabilise and supply improves, commercial cylinder distribution is expected to resume.
Until then, restaurants and other businesses relying on commercial LPG may need to explore alternative cooking fuel options or adjust operations.
